Commentary: Quirky and subtly colorful sort of reading spot; it almost looks like a theater set or backstage lounge area, but quite welcoming for a reader, as well. The low-lying table can hold books, tray of tea or fruit, stacks of papers and notes. The divan looks comfortable, and the entire spot has sort of a sequestered feeling to it, as if it's a nice place to pass an hour or two browsing a new book.

Commentary: Clearly a bookish cocoon for a leisurely rainy day, when the primary objective is to sprawl comfortably and just read for hours. The stacks of hardcovers serve almost like makeshift tables, the couch looks sturdy but comfy, with plenty of pillows in soft materials. A bit boho, cluttered and casual. The forecast calls for rain? Well, then!

Commentary: What's nice about this is that either way, a book lover is covered - there's either the comfy couch or the divan close by, for reading at night, then there's a cute little set of chairs on the balcony for some morning browsing. 

Lots of light, colorful and cheery, not too cluttered, and even that rug looks comfy for a lazy reader who can't be bothered to choose from between three great choices, but decides instead to just sprawl on the floor, flipping through a huge coffee table book.

Commentary: You're indoors, but outdoors - and vice versa. Cute little summer cottage, mellow and low-key, with plenty of space for sprawling, chair for stacking up books, fireplace for chilly nights, and a nice bit of greenery on all sides.

Cute reading nook, especially nice for a lazy summer read of something completely frivolous. Greenhouse cottage is 12 x 18 feet (3.65 x 5.48 meters).

Excerpt from interview with the builder in My Home Ideas, where this photo appears in a feature on summer cottages:

Don Viens has literally built a cottage industry in his own backyard. After constructing a greenhouse for his partner's floral company from scrap materials, Viens created a backyard retreat business.

His fantastic cottages have earned him a reputation for recycling with creativity. He says, 'I enjoy using lots of color and playful elements and letting my sheds take shape from the materials I find.'

Commentary: Well-lit reading space in a private home in Kungsladugård, Göteborg, Sweden. What's nice here, apart from the quality of natural light, are the options - can sit in a chair and read, or sprawl out a bit using the ottoman; in the second image below, you'll see there's also a couch along the wall. There's enough room on the table for a stack of books, and the fresh flowers are also a nice touch.

There are additional images from this photo shoot below, interesting wallpaper print (birches) change the mood of the room slightly, giving the room a touch of quirkiness in an otherwise homey but somewhat subdued space, with only a few touches of color. It's possible to take a tour of the rest of the flat, here.

Commentary: Pleasant little room for reading, painting, arranging flowers, maybe for a light supper. So, a multi-purpose sort of room, but with excellent quality of light and surfaces for books, definitely a nice reading spot. This would be a particularly nice place for a summer read, either inside, with a bowl of apples, or through the doors and out into the garden.

Commentary: This is the interior of a cute reading pod someone can install in their yard, if they have one. There's a skylight, shelves for books, spot to curl up, see-through doors so there's light to read by and a nice view. Cute little construction. You can see the exterior here, if you like: Polyhedron exterior


Info provided by Design Boom: Colombia-based Manuel Villa Arquitecto has completed a habitable polyhedron dwelling for a backyard in Bogota, Colombia. The aim of 'polyhedron pod' is to create a space for leisure activities such as reading, and to help visitors reconnect with nature and the surrounding landscape. 


The design features an expansive wooden deck leading up to a set of glass and steel doors. The built-in furniture in the interior includes a desk, cupboards, shelving, and a bench. The walls are left in their natural, untreated teak form on the inside, while a black, honeycomb-patterned skin wraps the outside. 


The final shape of the structure was determined after a number of model studies were drawn up and eventually scrapped. The finished form was chosen for its versatility, adaptability and structure.

Commentary: Set up very simply, there's just enough room on the table for a pot of tea and a well-selected book you've been waiting to read. The colors here are also pleasant, making a bit of time spent reading seem like a happy indulgence.


This probably wouldn't be a spot for a few hours of reading - but it would be a nice spot to bring a tote bag, directly from a book shop, to sit and look at all the interesting new titles you've acquired, then select the perfect one and make a good start on the first few chapters.


The planter on the table is charming, but could easily just be put on the floor, if more space on the tabletop were wanted.


Commentary from the photographer (Leone Fabre): My special little corner of the world, where I usually sit at some stage during the day reading a book and having coffee or perhaps a green tea. This is my balcony on the 18th floor of the condo where I live in Singapore. It's a beautiful little haven at any time of the day or night - but the view at night is stunning.

Commentary: This is great, you can go camp out in the woods for the night and not even have to leave your office. It's a library. In the woods. The scenery here would be way better than anything you could find while channel-surfing on television. 


There'd also be variety to keep the environment new and interesting, without having to do any heavy lifting - just sit there and watch as nature paints you a new picture every day. As noted in the project comments, your office walls would be 'green in the summer, orange in the fall, and white in the winter.'


You can see here that the structure is constructed so that it sits up a bit off the ground, so, high enough that there won't be any bears just strolling in, but with a beautiful view any time of the day or night.


Notes from Apartment Therapy: This private library sits in the woods near Olivebridge, New York. Designed by Peter Gluck and Partners Architects, the Scholar's Library provides book storage and a lofted study filled with natural light.


Description from the project page: A pure and elegant Platonic cube here matches the unity of the building's purpose and form, in both programmatic and metaphorical terms. 


The first floor is completely closed and contains stacks for a library of books. The second floor, which is entirely open, is a scholar's working study. The study sits on the books below much like scholarship rests on the body of work that precedes it. 


The structure expresses this dual character, with the floating roof cantilevered off the second floor to highlight the distinction between the solid and the void. 


The windows (standard-issue sliding doors) open on all four sides, stacking in opposite corners, to create the feeling of an aerie in the woods. The changing seasons provide the context, with the study 'walls' green in the summer, orange in the fall, and white in the winter. 


An economy of means in cost, materials, and structure result in simplicity and directness with no elaboration. The study is a serene and solitary haven for quiet work that is at the same time immersed in the natural world around it. (More)

Commentary: Cheerful colors , nice quality of light and a mellow, low-key design would make this a pleasant place to read. The greenery is also nice, as are the extra pillows and lap blankets and small tables that can be moved around to hold extra books or notes or a bowl of grapes to nibble on.
